Doreothea Lange

Lange was able to show the effects of the Depression not only through portraits but through details. The striking close-up of the mended stockings of a stenogrpaher provides a somewhat amusing glimpse into one woman’s response to her circumstances. Better to be seen with stitched and repaired stockings than none at all.
